Buying Wisely

Some items sell very well, while other items don't sell at all. The trick is knowing what to buy and how much to pay for it based on a number of factors including age, color, type, style and condition. It takes time to learn what items will sell well on online auctions like ebay, so you have to careful not to spend too much money buying blindly in the beginning or at least until you get a good understanding of the areas or markets you want to focus on. You can't start out buying everything you see or like, you have to decide what types of items you know something about. The more knowledge you have about a certain item the better. If you want to make money selling these items you purchase at garage or estate sales, you have to be sure that you don't spend too much money on any one item. This will limit your potential loss to a small amount should the item not sell for as much as you hoped. I suggest you take time to investigate what similar items have been selling for at auction. Ebay lets registered users scroll through completed auctions to see what various items have sold for in the recent past.

I like buying old railroad lanterns. Some sell for hundreds of dollars on ebay as avid collectors are always looking to buy certain types and styles for their collections. The trick is to know which lanterns only sell for $10 and which ones sell for hundreds of dollars. The key is usually condition and identifiable markings. Lanterns that have the name of a railroad imprinted on the glass always do very well. Age is also a major factor. The older the better. There are dozens of websites that have pictures and descriptions of old lanterns which helps with identifying the age and type of lantern you have found and it's potential value. The lantern below says U.P.R.R. on the glass, which stands for Union Pacific Railroad.

This lantern was bought at a garage sale for $10 and sold for $52 on ebay.
